A13: roadworks on the Lueg Bridge along Brenner

The Luegbrücke is the longest bridge on the Brenner freeway and is located in the Wipptal valley, just 30 kilometers behind the Europabrücke bridge (seen from the north), near the Austrian-Italian border. According to the Austrian highway company, the renovation cannot be postponed as the structure has reached the end of its service life.

The actual construction work is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 and is expected to last until 2030. A new bridge with two lanes will be built parallel to the current Lueg Bridge. Once this is completed, all traffic will be diverted onto this bridge and the old structure will be demolished. A second new bridge with additional lanes will be built in its place.

In order to avoid the greatest traffic chaos , two lanes of traffic will run in both directions on busy travel days. Around 180 days have been set for both southbound and northbound traffic to cross the Lueg Bridge in two lanes.

This includes all Saturdays up to and including March 15 as well as some Sundays.

From April to October, the Lueg Bridge will then generally be open to two lanes of traffic on many days.

The Easter, Whitsun and summer vacations are also affected.

Heavy traffic with vehicles over 3.5 tons will then be diverted from the right lane to the left lane in the approach before the Lueg Bridge . This ensures that the largest load is centered on the bridge and thus relieves the strain on it. Car traffic can, but does not have to, switch to the right-hand lane. However, the condition for this is that trucks avoid the right-hand lane altogether. This solution was successfully tested in a trial run in July 2024.

Alternatives to motorway travel

A safe and uncongested alternative to the Brenner motorway is the TRAIN.

It is strictly forbidden to divert from the motorway onto the Brenner road, which is controlled by the Austrian police.

Here you can find information on the traffic situation in real time.
