Camping Lazise: holidays in Italy's first municipality

Lazise, towards the lower part of the lake, is a fortified village dating right back to the Middle Ages and dominated by the Castle, originally built in the 9th century, extended by the Della Scala family and subsequently restructured and restored.
The village, enclosed within the mediaeval walls with their six towers, boasts a refined, Venetian-like atmosphere, with the focal point remaining the spacious square looking onto the river port.
The name derives from the Latin lacus (lake), and it is one of the oldest of the towns and villages in the area.
The distinctive character and ambitious nature of Lazise was evident as far back as 983 A.D., when the Holy Roman Emperor Otto II accorded it the title of first Free Municipality of Italy.
The original port and the Customs House already appeared on maps of the area as early as the 10th century, indicating that it was already a thriving village at the time. The most important building in Lazise, however, is the striking Castle, together with the walls that circle the historic centre and were built to protect it from enemy raids during the late Middle Ages.
Over the years, the village’s main activity has shifted from fishing to tourism, making Lazise a popular destination for painters such as Gustav Klimt, as well as tourists from all over Europe, especially Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.

Lazise is without a doubt one of the towns that welcomes the largest number of tourists every summer, on Lake Garda, earning for years a place in the ranking of Italy's top 20 destinations.

The centre of the town, developed along the shores of the lake, is conveniently and strategically located for walking and biking along the cycle-pedestrian path that also connects the campsites in Lazise further away, to the historic centre. There are many tourists who, thanks to this easy walk, can move around safely with the whole family, including their pets, and it is exactly for this reason that the offer of campsites in Lazise with dogs allowed is very rich.

The two neighbourhoods of Colà and Pacengo the opportunity to combine the attractions of the lake with those of the surrounding countryside and farmland.

Some of the area's main attractions are located in the municipality, such as Movieland and Caneva for the most adrenalin-fuelled days, and the Terme di Colà with the luxuriant park of Villa dei Cedri to spend pleasant moments in total relaxation surrounded by the green of the centuries-old trees inside and enjoying all the benefits of the thermal waters.

To welcome tourists who choose to spend their holidays in Lazise every day, the majestic Scaligero Castle with its ancient city walls instantly shows off the beauty of this Garda jewel. The large park surrounding the walls and the castle is the venue for numerous events throughout the year, such as the Honey Days in October, another popular event that leads many people to choose to stay in a campsite, village or glamping in Lazise.

During your weekend in Lazise, an evening tour of the harbour and Dogana Veneta is a must; when the Republic of Venice held sway in the area, goods would arrive here to be sorted and then sent to the municipalities on eastern coast of the Lake Garda.
Today, visitors can still see fishing boats moored in the port of the village, testifying to the predominant role fishing once played here.

Opting for a campsite in Lazise will turn out to be an excellent and practical choice because the centre offers everything you need to spend a dream holiday, and in only 10 minutes you can reach Gardaland by car or by public transport, which stops conveniently near many campsites and holiday villages in Lazise.
