There's no doubt about it, just thinking about windsurfing and kitesurfing naturally evokes images of ocean waves – after all, kitesurfing or kiteboarding was created in Hawaii and has been recognized as a full-fledged sport since 1999. However, thanks to two winds, the Péler and the Ora, the waters of Lake Garda are also ideal for this sport all year round. The winds blow all day long, the former from north to south in the morning, the latter in the afternoon from south to north.
Because of the great popularity of surfing and kitesurfing, the eastern shore of Lake Garda is getting better and better equipped to offer an efficient service to tourists and athletes who want to experience the thrill and speed of being harnessed to a kite blown by the wind.
On the eastern shore, and especially in the northern part of the lake, starting in Malcesine, there are several surfing and kitesurfing schools which are recognized by the Italian Sailing Federation (“Federazione Italiana Vela”). They offer courses for beginners and freestylers, and help surfers obtain the international VDWS license.
Every year, these centers renew their equipment with cutting edge kites and boards, keeping in mind that female athletes might be more comfortable with lighter kites. Wetsuits, life-jackets and bars are also provided. For kitesurfing, as well as all necessary equipment, a boat service is often offered so you can reach the best areas, both with and without waves.
Lake Garda Trentino is the perfect place to practice both windsurfing and kitesurfing sports, a fun and adrenaline-filled discipline capable of giving unique emotions between sky and water.
Above all the town of Torbole over the years has become a point of reference for both disciplines. There are kitesurf and windsurf schools, which offer lessons of all levels, from beginners to the more experienced.
As for the northern area of Lake Garda Bresciano, Campione is undoubtedly one of the historical places for kitesurfing. Thanks to its thermal winds, the Pelér in the morning from the north and the Ora in the afternoon from the south, guarantees constant wind throughout the season. The small village of Campione del Garda has a space also equipped for windsurfing and is supported by a school of professionals.
Limone del Garda is also a point of reference for both windsurfing and kitesurfing, with several centers for renting equipment and for courses of all levels.
