Sirmione
When people think about Lake Garda, the locality of Sirmione is without any doubts one of the most demanded and well-known. Sirmione is able to captivate the tourists immediately, thanks to the many historical beauties and to the fascination that characterize the city and make it stand out among the other cities of Lake Garda. If you walk through the old town, which is surrounded by the walls of the castle, you get lost between the alleys and you can discover hidden glimpses, buildings and shops of any kind.
The Castle of Sirmione was built from the noble family of the Scaliger, even if we don’t know the exact construction date. The complex is entirely surrounded by the water of Lake Garda, it’s protected by three towers and represents a fortification with port use, not residential.
Another important point of interest are the Grottoes of Catullus, which consist in some rests of a Roman domus that is attributed to the family of the Latin poet Catullus. It an archeological complex that not only represents the most important testimony of the Roman period in the municipal territory, but is also one of the most important Roman villas in the North of Italy. You can reach the Grottoes only by foot or, during the summer, it’s possile to catch an electric train.
The free beach Giamaica is maybe the most famous among the many beaches of the locality. The access id for free, so everyone has the possibility to benefit from it in order to admire the breathtaking view and to dive in the crystal clear water, surrounded by the typical long slabs of flat rocks.
We suggest you to reach the peninsula of Sirmione by ferry-boat, so you can avoid the traffic and enjoy the panorama directly from the water of the lake.
