The nine contradas of the town of Garda get ready to celebrate their very own traditions, before competing in a Venetian-style rowing race during the traditional "Palio delle Contrade" ("Palio of the Contradas" or neighborhoods) on 15 August.
For over 50 years, the PALIO DELLE CONTRADE has taken place on the feast day of Mary's Assumption (the church in Garda is actually dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin in paradise). It is the most important celebration for the ancient community of fishermen. Along the lake-front, between the port and the town-hall, when the sun is about to set, the gondolas of the nine contradas pit their paddles to compete and establish their supremacy over the town. Every team is made up by four rowers, who stand up and row on alternate styles, in the classic style used by local fishermen...the "voga alla veneta" (Venetian-style rowing).
The day comes to a close with a fireworks display over the water.
In the weeks leading up to the event, a whole day is dedicated to each contrada. With music, folklore and entertainment, the different neighborhoods will make sure everyone is involved in the typically festive atmosphere of the Garda!
